Paul Pieper, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, will discuss air to air energy recovery systems. An overview of current and proposed standards and guidelines will be presented to identify areas where energy recovery is mandated, and where energy recovery can be employed to meet and exceed performance requirements for efficiency, thermal comfort and ventilation.

Jennifer is one of Stantec's original environmental design leaders. Her interest in sustainable design began when she first started with Stantec and resulted in the success of a number of energy efficient projects. She knows the importance of having buildings and communities work with the environment, as opposed to being self-contained and working against the surroundings. Jennifer seeks low-tech solutions for her sustainable designs, and prefers to keep the design simpler, with more natural systems.

Variable Refrigerant Volume Systems
Julian R. de Bullet has over 30 years experience in the HVAC industry. His career has concentrated on the applied use of Chilled Water and All-Air systems as a manager of
applied equipment sales and as a manager of a service/performance contracting operation.
Mr. de Bullet the Director of Industry Relations for McQuay International, based in Washington D.C. He is responsible for assisting McQuay customers and McQuay sales representatives in HVAC&R system design and specification. He is a member of numerous industry associations concentrating on energy efficiency and responsible refrigerant use. As ASHRAE Vice President (2001/2003), he served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee and was Chair of Member Council and Publishing Council. He is Past President of the National Capital Chapter and was Director and Regional Chair for ASHRAE Region III. He chaired the Professional Development Committee and is a member of the Programs and Education Council and the Society advocacy Committee.

These projects have included a variety of HVAC systems, central plants, new and renovation plumbing design, and piping for medical gas, hydronic heating, snow melting systems, and steam. She has extensive experience in biological safety laboratories, infection control during hospital construction, sustainable design, multidiscipline project coordination, critical room airflow patterns, and postgraduate research on geothermal heat pump systems. In addition, Traci teaches HVAC in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Gonzaga University as an adjunct faculty member. Traci's industrial experience includes machine design, heat transfer, and finite element analysis.

Greater Efficiency Today, Blue Skies Tomorrow. Innovation for a Sustainable Built Environment
Kent Peterson, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE 2007-08, President, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, is vice president and chief engineer of P2S Engineering Inc., Long Beach, California.
As ASHRAE's president, Mr. Peterson directs the Society's Board of Directors and oversees the Executive Committee. Through his theme, Greater Efficiency Today, Blue Skies Tomorrow, Mr. Peterson emphasizes innovation in the quest for sustainability in the built environment. He notes that "energy efficiency should always be the elegant alternative to fuel consumption." As such, he encourages ASHRAE members and the industry to be more innovative in their thinking, more daring in their creativity, and more dedicated to their pursuit of best practices that will dramatically improve building energy performance.

Radiant Heating and Cooling Systems
Radiant heating and cooling systems, with an emphasis on radiant slab cooling and ventilation systems for commercial buildings. The presentation will cover general radiant system design, radiant cooling system design requirements, and typical radiant slab system design and installation issues. Terry Hunter of Schneider Canada, formerly Elite Engineering is well known in Victoria and around the province. Graduating from Lakehead University in 86, Terry worked for Westinghouse until 94 and then started Elite Engineering, which specialized in engineering and commissioning of high voltage equipment and generation sites. Elite Engineering was recently acquired by Schneider Canada.

So if everything we hear about BACnet interoperability is true, you should be able to throw BACnet Control components from numerous different manufacturers in a room with a couple of control experts for a couple of hours and quickly have a communicating network…right? Come and see how it's done, and if we can do it without 'letting the smoke out'. We'll set up several BACnet workstations to communicate to the network, allowing attendees to get the feel of some of the recent additions to BACnet objects and services. Can we program a sequence in one BACnet device to turn an output on in a BACnet device from a different manufacturer? There's only one way to find out!

Tour of the Hartland Landfill Gas Reclamation Plant
In 2003, a landfill gas-to-electricity plant was built next to the flare station at Hartland Landfill to utilize the methane in the landfill gas to produce electricity. The facility now produces close to 1.6 megawatts of green power - enough electricity to supply about 1,600 homes.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling - The Face of the Future
Eric Dickie is one of three people in Canada who are International Ground Source Heat Pump Association certified to instruct installers. He has conducted courses from Moncton to Vancouver, and does installations in the Okanagan Valley. He has a passion for geothermal, and definitely sees it as one component to solving at least a portion of our energy problems. As energy costs continue to rise and global warming becomes more of a concern, this is placed to become an incredibly strong growth industry - something that will leave behind anyone that isn't conversant with it. Eric's presentation will focus on the nuts and bolts of solid geothermal design, since whatever the application, design is key to success.

Current Trends in Design and Installation of Filtration Systems
for Building HVAC Security
HVAC design has been evolving towards higher efficiency building design and more outside air supply to meet IAQ concerns through dilution. Since September 11th, the use of outside air has taken on a darker element as designers are asked to protect buildings from potential terrorist attacks that could come in the form of toxic gases released into a building air intake system. The possibility of a terrorist exposing the occupants to a simple gas such as chlorine or a virus such as anthrax makes the use of dilution potentially quite hazardous. This presentation will explore air-cleaning methods that can complement dilution and can serve as an alternative for building protection.

Tour of the UVic Island Medical Building
Island Medical is a Tri-University project (U Vic, UBC, UNBC) completed late 2004. This project is under review for LEED Gold Accreditation. It is the only medical training facility on Vancouver Island, and allows for 32 medical students per year starting Sept 2005. Some key LEED features are: waste water reuse for flushing fixtures, variable volume fume hoods with heat recovery, R407c (non HCFC) refrigerant chillers. Project Engineers Rob Hirschfield and Roy Gammer will give a brief presentation about the building and guide tours. A University of Victoria representative will give a brief talk about the LEED aspects of this project.

Dual-Fan-Dual-Duct at Topham School
Topham School uses half the heat of any other school in the Langley school district yet the HVAC system cost less to install, has fewer problems, costs less to maintain, is quiet, and is receiving better teacher feedback on comfort and indoor air quality. This seminar will discuss how a Dual-Fan-Dual-Duct system was implemented to achieve these benefits and which of the design principles can also be applied to other system types. It will also discuss practical issues in achieving these benefits for other facilities.

"LEED - EB" An Overview of LEED Accreditation of Existing Buildings
The Retrofit Program has been established to help provincially funded educational and health care organizations procure building retrofits to conserve energy and water and to reduce green house gas emissions and waste reduction. From 2001 to date over $112 million in new capital projects have used the resources and services of the Retrofit Program. Brian is coordinating the only Canadian LEED Existing Building Pilot Project, the 1.2 million square foot, Robson Square Court complex. The presentation will discuss the reasons for under taking a LEED EB process, the synergy between other projects, the organizational benefits, the operational benefits and the lessons learned along the way.

ASHRAE 90.1 Perspective on Chiller Plant Design
Modern DDC Controllers on chillers allow the possibility of variable flow design. Traditional thinking has been that the chiller should see constant flow and then the load will vary with the return fluid temperature. Allowing variable flow means the cooling load can vary either with the return fluid temperature or a change in the chilled water flow. ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 details the use of variable flow designs. Is it that easy? What about "Low Delta T" Syndrome? This presentation will offer advice and guidance on how to design cost effective and reliable chilled water systems.

The Internet and Microsoft browsers have provided an international platform for building automation and its connection to the enterprise. The standardization of field bus protocols such as BACnet and Lon are also allowing control applications to become global phenomena. XML is now the emerging giant and change is everywhere. The Butchart Gardens Ground Loop - Water Source Chiller System with Site Tour and Night Lighting Display.
Our next meeting will be held onsite at the ASHRAE Regional Technology Award winning site The Butchart Gardens Ian Burton, will provide a tour and discussion on the ground loop chiller heat rejection system with insight into the building EMCS. The facility incorporates an extensive hydronic installation based on 4 pipe fan coils with 100% airside economizers. Plate frame heat exchangers serve as waterside economizers and for waste heat recovery to domestic hot water. This is a split tour. You can choose to guide yourself through The Butchart Gardens world famous night lighting display, or tour the mechanical systems of the facility, then tour the lights when done.

Tour of the Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, Bruno Quenneville, Tech Mechanical Systems Ltd. and Chuck Simpson of Simpson Controls.
We are pleased to have Bruno Quenneville, Commissioning Specialist with TECH Mechanical Systems Ltd. and Chuck Simpson of Simpson Controls, give a guided tour of this new teaching facility. The architecturally striking facility incorporates 12 Heat Pump assemblies, served by variable water flow control through ocean heat/ cool piping bundles).

The facility was designed by Paul Merrick Architects and the mechanical engineers were Quadra Pacific.

He has represented individual and corporate clients, as well as undertaking class action cases such as radiant heat ceiling panels and leaky condos. This interesting and informative session will appeal to all the players in the construction industry. Paperless business practises: Are emails legal and binding documents? What constitutes Substantial Completion and what are the contracting parties' obligations? Holdbacks, how long? How have the courts ruled on recent construction liability issues?

We are pleased to have Alex Zimmerman, the President of the newly formed Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC), giving a presentation about one of the world's most sustainable commercial building projects, the Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) in London, England, that he visited last year. He will also be talking about the recently formed CaGBC and its objectives.
